Do your dam wall over flow in heavy rain falls? Warning: If it does, this can cause your dam wall the break.

A large number of dam failures have caused immense property damage when floodwaters destroy infrastructure. In addition, ecosystems and habitats are destroyed as a result of waters flooding them

Spillways

Dams almost always have “spillways” (Like Spoon drains or large pipes) designed to release the water if it is about to “overtop,” or overflow the top of the dam wall. Overtopping of a dam is often a precursor of dam failure.

Spillways can be made of concrete, earth, rock. Most spillways for most ponds are made of dirt. Earthen spillways typically sit at the end of the dam, with terraces extending well beyond the back toe of the dam, typically releasing water into the same creek or waterway that was dammed in the first place, as far away from the dam as possible. Earthen spillways have the gentlest slope possible, to allow water to move as slowly as possible.

Spillway Failure

In most cases of dam wall failures on our smaller dams found on farms and acreages, are a result of spillway failures. Over time spillways gets over grown, floaded with mud and debris. This caused blockage in the spillway and a ineffective spillways becomes active. The result, the dam wall over flows and start to erode/damage the dam wall.

The overtopping the dam wall, will start to erode/remove bedding layers from the top and the back of the dam wall. At some stage this will lead to a catastrophic results

Preventive action:

Periodically the spilway area needs cleaning around the spillway. Over growth, mud and debris needs to be removed. Call, Txt or email us, we will get this sorted for you.

Other Maintenance

Do not let trees or shrubs grow on the embankment,
spillway or spillway outlet slope. Roots might disturb
the compacted soil and provide a seepage path for
water, while trees or shrubs in the spillway area will
restrict the flow of flood water.

Gravel Driveway Maintenance & Repair Guidees.

A well-maintained gravel driveway not only improves the appearance of your property but also extends the life of the surface and reduces ongoing repair costs. Whether you are dealing with potholes, drainage problems, weeds, or unstable ground, understanding the correct repair methods can make a major difference.

At Sutton’s Earthworks, we help property owners create and maintain durable gravel driveways built to handle Australian conditions.

Start With a Proper Driveway Inspection

Before repairing or upgrading a driveway, it’s important to identify the underlying issues. Common problems include:

  • Potholes
  • Water runoff and drainage issues
  • Soft or unstable ground
  • Washouts and ruts
  • Excessive weeds
  • Poor gravel selection
  • Inadequate compaction

A proper inspection allows the correct repair method to be used instead of simply covering over the problem temporarily.

Choosing the Right Gravel for Your Driveway

Not all gravel is suitable for driveways. The correct material improves drainage, compaction, and long-term durability.

Recommended Gravel Sizes

For most driveways, 20 mm gravel is ideal. This size provides good stability while still allowing proper drainage.

Smaller gravel commonly used for pathways (6mm–10mm) is usually too fine for heavy vehicle traffic.

Gravel Layers

Driveways should generally have a total gravel depth of:

  • 100mm to 150mm minimum
  • Installed in multiple compacted layers where possible

Proper layering helps prevent future rutting and potholes.

Gravel should be raked up onto the driveway, and tamped down until it’s flat. Then the gravel should be wetted down with a hose, allowing the rock to shift and the dirt to accept the gravel once again. Don’t use too much water, because you might cause the driveway to shift and the dirt to run.

Avoid Using River Rock

River rock may look attractive, but it is generally not suitable for driveways because it shifts too easily under vehicle traffic.

Better choices include:

  • Crushed granite
  • Crushed shale
  • Limestone
  • Crushed concrete
  • Quality road base materials

These materials compact properly and create a stronger surface.

Drainage Is Critical

Water is one of the biggest causes of gravel driveway failure.

Poor drainage leads to:

  • Rutting
  • Washouts
  • Soft spots
  • Potholes
  • Erosion

Stone for Drainage

Larger stone products work best for drainage systems and French drains.

Recommended stone sizes:

  • 20mm and larger
  • 20mm to 40mm  for standard drainage layers
  • 75mm stone where heavy water flow exists

Dense stone such as granite is preferred because it allows water flow without breaking down over time.

The Importance of a Crowned Driveway

A properly crowned driveway allows water to run off both sides instead of pooling in wheel tracks.

A recommended crown is:

  • Approximately 12.7mm fall per 300mm of width

For example:

A 2.5m wide driveway should have approximately 51mm fall from the centre crown to each edge.

Too much crown can become unsafe, while too little crown allows water damage.

Crown Gravel driveways

Ditches and Water Management

Driveway side drains and ditches should always remain clear of debris.

Recommended minimum ditch size:

  • 300mm deep
  • 300mm wide

Areas with heavy runoff may require larger drains, culverts, or additional water diversion systems.

Repairing Potholes Correctly

Simply filling potholes with loose gravel is only a temporary fix.

Proper Repair Method

  1. Remove the damaged section fully
  2. Regrade the base
  3. Add coarse gravel in layers
  4. Compact each layer properly
  5. Finish with suitable top gravel

Compaction is essential for a long-lasting repair.

Managing Soft or Clay Ground

Clay-heavy soil can create major problems because it expands and contracts with moisture changes.

When dealing with unstable ground:

  • Proper excavation may be required
  • Additional base material may need to be installed
  • Geotextile fabric can help stabilise soggy subgrades
  • Adequate drainage becomes even more important

In severe cases, a driveway may require full reconstruction.

Long-Term Gravel Driveway Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps avoid expensive rebuilds later.

Key Maintenance Tips

  • Regrade regularly
  • Maintain drainage
  • Remove weeds early
  • Add fresh gravel when required
  • Compact loose surfaces
  • Repair potholes immediately before they worsen

Professional grading and compaction equipment helps maintain a smooth and durable surface.
